The 2006 National Limousin Champion, Arldea Tammy, owned by Mr. Dan Tynan, Mountrath, Co. Laois, sold for €40,000 at last Saturday’s on farm production sale. Tammy was crowned National Limousin Champion just a week earlier at the Ploughing Championships in Tullow and was one of 36 homebred females that was offered for sale at the annual Ardlea production sale.

With a string of championships behind her that include National Senior Female of the Year 2005, Junior Female Champion at the 2005 European Show in Paris and Overall Reserve Champion at Tullamore 2005, it was expected that Tammy would attract active interest at the sale. After beating off a lot of strong bidding from both southern and northern customers, the Smith family from Bloxham,UK, successfully secured the Champion at €40,000 – just shy of the current Irish record of €42,000. Born in October ’02, Tammy is a daughter of the herd stock sire, Lino, and is out of a French imported cow, Lilas.

Elite Ubanna received the second highest price at €27,000. Born in August ’03 and sired by Nenuphar, she was also bought by the Smith’s of Bloxham, who manage a 130 cow pedigree herd.

Not stopping there, the Smith’s went on to secure the next highest priced heifer at €22,000 which was given for Ardlea Victoria. A daughter of Poker and winner of the All Ireland Senior Heifer Class, Victoria is currently incalf to Tatar B.

Peter Smith from Co. Derry bought a Lino heifer, Ardlea Uno, for €7,800. Her dam, Ballynerrin Maud, was the Reserve National Limousin Champion in 1999. Other Northern buyers includede Frank Flynn, Co. Fermanagh who bought two heifers; Darren Mc Cormick, also from Co. Fermanagh, bought two heifers, while Kevin Mc Donnell from Fivemiletown purchased one.

Meanwhile, Chris Kenneddy, Co. Carlow, secured a daughter of the 55,000 gns bull, Grahams Samson, for €8,500. Noel Brennan, Co. Limerick paid €5,000 for an Ideal 23 heifer, while Denis O’Neill, Co. Kerry took home a daughter of Sleedagh Solomon, for €4,100.

Overall ten animals went to the UK and Northern Ireland. Thirty six females averaged €5,830.
